U-997 served between September 1943 and the end of the war when the submarine was surrendered and subsequently sunk by Allied aircraft with more than 100 other U-boats during Operation Deadlight

U-997 was one of lucky ones to survive the war

Launched in March 1918

The fortunate balloon observer has managed to take to his parachute to escape this time

and it went on to earn a commendable reputation - and the nickname Whispering Death
